How to choose an electric convector heating
Of the variety of existing models of portable, floor and wall heaters of future buyers are often interested in heaters related to the type of electric convectors. In order not to be disappointed in your choice later, you need to know how to choose this device correctly.
Merits
The compactness of the models working on this principle is impressive. They have a flattened, rectangular shape convection chamber, acceptable dimensions - require little space for placement and are very convenient in operation.
Convectors are distinguished by a lightweight construction (without filling with mineral oil or ethylene glycol) of a protective-decorative casing, on which there are no bulky component elements and an aggregate type of mounted parts. In the appearance of some models of electrical appliances there is no pronounced functionality. Sometimes it is even difficult to determine their belonging to the family of heating devices. Among other things, what distinguishes convectors favorably is the harmonious fit into any interior.
They are wonderfully combined with the decor of the premises of the most diverse purposes - from apartments and offices to summer houses, stalls and trade pavilions.
Principle of operation
These devices have significant differences from radiator electric heaters on liquid thermal carriers or infrared (IR) emitters, with which they are usually confused. The range of models of convector heaters - is an independent form. Despite the fairly widespread popularity, few people represent the principle of their work.
A convector is a device that uses the physical principle of one of the most common natural phenomena - convection of atmospheric air layers. This movement of warm, rising, light air masses and replacing them with heavier cold ones. The result is a moving upward natural stream of warm air that spreads inside the room space.
In an electric convector, through the lower slit-like openings of the grids, cold air enters the device, it is heated in the casing by the heating element to the required temperature and enters the space of the room through the upper openings of the lattice.
Types and device heaters
According to the place of localization in the room, the following types of convectors are distinguished:
- Floor standing instruments or rollers moving indoors within the length of the electrical cord. Structurally provided for the use of most models of this type as the wall.
- Wall mounted or attached to the wall (often under the windows, instead of radiators, to create an additional thermal curtain) using metal brackets.
- Plinths, no more than 15–20 cm high, installed instead of baseboards around the perimeter of the room, and inside-floor ones, built into the floor screed with the ventilation grille extending out.
According to the type of heating element used, indicated in the technical characteristics of the model, convectors are:
- Needle - on the board (ribbon) of the dialectic, stitched with pointed loops of chrome-nickel heating thread.
- Tubular heating elements (heating elements), using nichrome thread in a tube with quartz or ceramic filling embedded in an aluminum radiator with plates-ribs. For decades, heating elements deservedly recognized as the most popular and reliable heater.
- Monolithic - nichrome filament with dialectic filling is placed inside an aluminum ribbed bar-heat exchanger.
When choosing a convector required power should be guided by a simple rule. For heating S = 10 m? the area of a room with a standard ceiling height (2.4–3.2 m) is 1 kW of instrument power. At the main heating power is selected 1.6 times more.
There are modern innovative developments of such heaters with a 2-fold lower power consumption per 1 m2 premises, compared with the devices of the "classical" design while maintaining thermal characteristics. In some of their forms, a ceramic plate, a screen, is used as an emitter of energy flow, and the heating element is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the enclosed rear screen of the housing. These are models of the Gibrid design, efficiency is achieved due to the correct directivity of the additional energy source - infrared (IR) radiation.
As a temperature controller, thermostats with manual installation are used. The device turns itself off when the set temperature is reached.
In modern models there is a programmable timer with touch and remote control. They are used to pre-set the temperature mode with the output information on the LED display. It is completed with an electronic thermostat that ensures the accuracy of the room temperature reading of 0.1? C.
Specifications
Electric heating convectors have a number of competitive advantages:
- Safe use - these devices do not burn oxygen, do not dry out the air and do not emit toxic substances, and also do not distribute extraneous odors. The surface of the protective casing has a temperature of 45? –65 ?, which allows to protect children and pets from burns. Contact with foreign objects, clothing or contact with furniture surfaces and interior items does not cause fire, melting or deterioration. In most cases, protection against moisture and dust from heating elements corresponds to IP24. This level of protection protects against continuous splashing of liquid and dust, which allows the use of appliances in the nursery and bathroom, pool areas, garages, allowed the possibility of storing heaters on the balcony. The category of electrical safety devices increased (first) or high (second).
- The lifetime is 10–25 years. In this case, the warranty period of service for quality models is set by manufacturers from 2 to 5 years.
- Maintaining a comfortable temperature in the room due to the automatic on / off thermostat.
- Quiet operation - no air-conditioning devices (fans, electric blowers, pumps).
- Smaller than other types of heaters, the inertia of heating and cooling. In terms of the cost of electrical energy, a “dry” convector is 25–30% more efficient than oil-filled radiators. Possesses high, about 95%, efficiency.
We hope that we helped you figure out how to choose the right heater. Note that it is necessary to correctly determine the selection criteria, not to choose a device, guided only by external preferences. It is necessary to correctly calculate the required power of the device and take into account the category of electrical safety, the degree of dust and moisture protection - compliance of the index with the international IP scale indicated in the technical characteristics of the purchased model. The heater, selected in accordance with all requirements, will be a reliable assistant and will serve you for a long time.
