Installation of heating radiators in apartments: replacement
Professional installation of radiators in an apartment is a service provided by many specialized organizations. Specialists will cope with the task quickly and efficiently. Moreover, the finished result will comply with the standards governing the installation of sanitary equipment.
When ordering professional installation work, you need to consider that the price of this service will be high. Meanwhile, having a simple installation tool in the home workshop and having free time, installation work can be done by hand without sacrificing the quality of the finished result.

In this article we will tell you about everything that you will encounter when installing the heaters. But, before installing radiators in the apartment, consider the requirements that apply to both heating equipment and installation.
Rules to Consider When Replacing Radiators

The installation rates of radiators in the apartment are governed by the rules given in the SNiP.
- The radiator selected to replace the original devices must withstand the coolant pressure in the system. If the system is centralized, it is necessary to inquire about the pressure parameters in the house management.
- The material from which the new radiator is made should not form a galvanic pair with pipes, as it may contribute to the intensive flow of corrosive processes.
- The distance from the upper edge of the heater to the lower edge of the sill should be 100 mm. If this distance is less than 3/4 parts of the heater depth, the intensity of heat flow release will decrease by several times, as a result of which the heating of the air in the room will be slow.
- The distance from the bottom plane of the heater must be at least 100 mm and not more than 150 mm. If the gap is less than the stated norm, there may be a difficulty in heat transfer. If the gap is larger than necessary, then the temperature difference across the height of the room will increase.
- The distance from the surface of the walls to the rear wall of the radiator must be at least 20 mm.. If this distance is halved, the heat output of the heater will be significantly reduced, and in addition dust will accumulate on its upper part.
The installation of the heating radiator in the apartment may vary in accordance with the type of heating system and in accordance with the type of connection of the battery to the pipes.

To date, three types of connections are relevant - one-way side, bottom and diagonal connection. The choice of the type of connection will depend on the design features of the radiator and on the method of connecting pipes.

If the pipes are conducted in the grooves or on the outer part of the wall, the connection will be lateral or diagonal. If the pipes are connected at the base of the floor, the connection may be lower.

Most of the radiators are equipped with only a side set of technological holes. Connecting such devices according to the lower scheme is not easy, so it is better to pay attention to those batteries that are equipped with an additional pair of inlet ports directly at the bottom.
Materials and tools for installation work

To install the radiators with their own hands in the apartment was carried out successfully, you need to stock up in advance with all the necessary tools and materials.
So, what we need:
- Heating radiator, selected in accordance with the parameters of the room system and your personal preferences.
Important: If a sectional radiator needs to be shortened or vice versa to increase several sections, a special radiator key with marked marks is required, each of which corresponds to one section in size.
- Through plugs - special fittings designed to connect pipes to the inlet and return pipe. As a rule, the traffic jams presented in the sale are standard. However, when buying, it is better to clarify whether the diameter of the product corresponds to the diameter of the inlet holes of the battery.
- Plugs - are acquired by the number of unused technological holes. The diameter of the plugs must match the diameter of the bore.
- Brackets - a wide range of hardware for which you can hang a radiator.

For most modern heating devices, brackets-studs with plastic seals are used. For old cast iron batteries, classic drive brackets up to 30 cm long can be used.
Important: If the new heater in terms of size and configuration corresponds to the originally installed device, you can use the brackets already mounted in the wall.
- Sealing materials: fum-tape or tow. If the joint is compacted with tow, a layer of oil paint must be applied over the seal and thus provide better hydrophobicity.
- A gas wrench for dismantling old connections and an adjustable wrench for working with new fittings.
- Hex key for 30 for screwing plugs.
- Bulgarian for cutting metal pipes or hacksaw for cutting polymer pipeline.
- Dies for cutting external threads on metal pipes.
- Welding machine for joining metal structural elements or a soldering iron for working with plastic pipes.
- The puncher with the drill (diameter of 12 mm).
- Water level, tape measure and pencil.
So, we have compiled a list of tools and consumables required for installation work. It remains to learn how to install radiators in the apartment.
Installation work

The installation of heating radiators in an apartment building involves the phased execution of work, the quality of which depends on the quality and sequence of the finished result.
Important: Installation work on the replacement of heating equipment in an apartment building should be carried out only at the end of the heating season, when the water from the system is drained.
The instruction is as follows:
- Using the gas key, dismantle the old battery. Using a gas wrench is motivated by the fact that, unlike a wrench, it captures and tightens the nut. As a result, even the old soured compounds can be disassembled. If the nut is loosened with difficulty, rust can be softened with special fluids such as WD-40.
Important: We remove the battery from the brackets not alone, but together as, most likely, it is partially filled with water.
- After the old heater is dismantled, we measure the location of the new radiator. We do this in accordance with the previously listed rules.
- Drill holes for brackets. Installing the brackets, check the horizontal position of them. If the battery is littered, air plugs may form in separate sections.
- On the installed brackets we hang the battery and immediately check that it does not swing when pressed.
- Using a wrench, we connect the fittings to the pipes.
Important: Check the tightness of the connections immediately fail, so you have to wait until the system is purged.
