What is better convector or fan heater
The variant with electric heating is almost universal. First, the electricity is carried out in all settlements and holiday villages. Secondly, in comparison with furnaces and solid fuel boilers, constant control and manual fuel addition are not required. Also, the use of electrical appliances for space heating is environmentally friendly and thanks to the built-in thermostats such devices are able to maintain the set air temperature for a long time. Among the many types of designs of electric heaters, two can be distinguished: a convector and a fan heater. Each of these devices has its own design features and nuances of application. From this article you will learn that a convector or a fan heater is better.
Convector
A convector is an electrical device that, with the help of a heating element, heats the air entering through the lower air intake holes. According to physical laws, the heated air comes out through the upper part of the body, in which the grill is arranged. Thus, there is an air exchange and the room gets warm. Modern convectors have a thermostat, emergency shutdown function and work on a minimally heated element in the design.
Heating elements in convectors can be of three types:
- Needle. This is the most economical option. The service life is small. Devices are afraid of dampness, quickly heated and cooled. Models with such heating elements are the cheapest.
- Tubular convector with aluminum fins. This design lasts longer, more efficient. When working, it may emit a slight crackle. Some models use splash protection. The price of such convectors is quite acceptable.
- Monolithic. The best at this point of the heating element. It has a long service life. Of all the structures, the least heat loss.
Such devices are available in floor and wall versions. As a rule, they have an attractive appearance. Work silently. The ability to set the required temperature or set up a convector for a long time on the "minimum salary" allows you to significantly save electricity. Convectors are adapted for long-term work, so their case is protected from overheating. Its temperature does not rise above 55 ° C. There are also models with minimal heating of the case, which can be installed in the nursery. To heat the air in rooms with high humidity (bathrooms), you should buy models with a special degree of protection.
An important advantage of convectors is the ability to install the heating system of the whole room (house, office, etc.).
Of course, there are drawbacks. These include slow warming of the room (the cooled convector will warm the room in a few hours), the relatively high cost of the product.
Since the convector is considered a household appliance, its power varies from 0.5 to 2.5 kW. The most popular are 1, 1.5 and 2 kW appliances.
Fan heater
The fan heater is a fairly compact device, in which a fan is mounted, which drives air through the heating element. In this way, heat transfer is forcibly accelerated and the room warms up very quickly. Like convectors, fan heaters are equipped with thermostats, but their range of action is much smaller.
Depending on the type of heating element, the maximum heating temperature is set:
- The electrospiral can heat up to 800 ° C, but at the same time it is an open heating element. During operation, the dust that has settled on it burns and an unpleasant smell spreads around the room. Also, an open spiral can cause a fire if the device falls, and a flammable object falls on it or into it. Such devices are the cheapest.
- Heaters with tubular and ceramic heating elements are heated to 200 ° C. They have a longer service life, more environmentally friendly and less fire hazard.
Two types of fans are used in these electric appliances: axial and tangential.
Some models have a special sponge on the back wall to hold dust, some - protection from falling.
There are floor and portable (compact) fan heaters. There are fan heaters that are mounted to the floor or hung on the wall. Such models warm the air a little worse than their indoor counterparts. The maximum power of fan heaters is 3 kW. The advantages of these devices can be attributed to their low cost compared to convectors.
The disadvantages of these devices include an unpleasant smell from burnt dust, a short operating time (due to high temperature, they quickly overheat if there is no thermostat).
When to apply and how to choose
When a decision is made to be heated with electrical appliances, it is necessary to clearly understand in which room you will use it and for how long.
If you decide to heat the country house in the rare and short-term visits there in the cold season, the use of a fan heater will be the best solution. You will quickly heat the desired room, and the appliance will not have time to overheat. Or during the period of maximum frost the existing heating does not cope and you need to heat the rooms. In this case, the fan heater will also help.
If you live in a house that you want to heat with an electric appliance, then it is better to install the convector in the place of the greatest heat loss, as a rule, under the window.
The devices should be selected according to their technical characteristics and functionality. Give preference to devices with the maximum degree of protection. If it is a fan heater, then it has a ceramic heating element, a retaining sponge on the back wall and a fall protection. It is better to choose a convector with a monolithic heating element.
The main thing should not be forgotten: each kilowatt of electricity heats 10 m2 areas with a ceiling height of up to 3 m. For each additional meter of height add 10% power. If the power of the device is underestimated, then we get underheating.
