Stinks of sewage in the bathroom: how to fix the problem
Modern sewage systems are equipped in such a way that the penetration of fumes and gases from the sewage into the room is excluded. However, in the event of malfunctions in the system, the owners of houses and apartments may encounter an unpleasant smell emanating from the bathroom or other sanitary fixtures. Next, we consider the reasons for such problems and what to do if it stinks of sewage.

Sewerage device
To make it easier to understand the causes of various failures of the internal sewage system, you should be familiar with its device. So, its basis is the riser, collecting drains from all apartments.
Plumbing appliances, which include baths, sinks, sinks, etc., are connected to the riser using sewer pipes. However, to ensure that evaporation from the riser does not penetrate through the drain holes of plumbing fixtures into the room, the connection is made through a siphon made in the form of a bent knee. The siphon provides a water seal that prevents odors from entering the apartment.

With regard to the principle of operation of the riser, then the drains go through it by gravity, due to the difference in the levels of the pipeline. When a large amount of water goes into the riser at the same time from several apartments, a discharge occurs in it. In order to normalize the pressure inside the system, a sewage drain pipe is taken out on the roof, which, in fact, is a continuation of the riser.
Causes of bad smell from sewage
Hydroseal stall
So, we dismantled the device of the internal sewer system, it is now much easier to understand why it stinks of sewage from the sink. Since the penetration of vapor into the apartment prevents the water lock, this problem is most often the result of its absence.

But, for what reason can the sewer trap disappear? To answer this question, you need to look at the scheme of the sewage system again. As mentioned above, to normalize the pressure in the system a fan pipe is used, but if ventilation clogs, air will be leaked in the place where the weakest air trap is.
Thus, when a large amount of water enters the riser, a vacuum occurs, causing the trap water to be sucked into the system. After this unpleasant odors easily penetrate into the room. Most often this happens with a bath siphon, as it is located below the siphon of other plumbing fixtures.
As a rule, the problem can be solved by cleaning the ventilation. To do this, you can ask for help from specialists. However, in old houses there may not be a funnel at all. In this case, the problem can be solved in two ways:
Install the fan pipe | Technically difficult, so the price of such an event will be quite high. |
Install a vacuum valve | The most simple and cheap option that allows air to enter the system, but at the same time, does not allow gas to go outside. |

It is not difficult to install a vacuum valve with your own hands, the only thing is that you need to observe the following rules:
- The valve must be located in a room with a positive temperature. Therefore, most often the device is installed either in the toilet or in a heated attic.
- If there is a grass drain in the floor, the valve should be installed 30-35 centimeters above the floor level.
- If there is no drain, install the device below the highest sewer drain by 10 centimeters.
- If the valve is intended only for the sink and toilet, the diameter of its aerator can be 50 millimeters. If the valve will be installed on the riser, you must use a device with an aerator diameter of 110 millimeters.
Note! It does not make sense to install the valve above the sixth floor, as it will not withstand heavy loads.
Installation of the valve is carried out in a special socket or in a free sewer outlet. For tight connection of the valve with a pipe use rubber cuffs.

Clogged siphon
As we found out, most often the cause of the stink from the sewer is faulty ventilation. But what to do if the apartment stinks sewage even in the presence of a water trap? Often, an unpleasant smell occurs as a result of hair accumulated in the siphon. Other organic compounds are deposited on them, which eventually begin to exude a stench.
Unsealed sewer lines
If you clean the siphon, and the stench from the sewer pipe has not passed, you need to check the tightness of the connections. Often the cause of this unpleasant phenomenon is the gap in the joints of pipes.

It must be said that as a result of depressurization of the in-house pipeline, it is often at the entrance that the sewage stinks. This problem is solved only by calling specialists and reconstruction of the riser.
Tip! Sometimes the source of an unpleasant odor in the bathroom is rubbish or wet cloth. In addition, high humidity in the room may lead to similar results.
Here, perhaps, is the whole instruction for removing the unpleasant smell of sewage from the premises.
Conclusion
Causes of stink from sewers can be very different. Therefore, before proceeding to any action, you must install them. This will eliminate this problem once and for all. From the video in this article, you can get more information on this topic.
