In this article we will talk about what constitutes a thin wall d16 Duralumin tube and similar products of other sizes. But before proceeding to the story about the products, consider the main characteristics of the materials used in their production.

Duralumin or, as it is also called, duralumin, is a metal alloy developed in the middle of the last century and not lost its relevance to this day.

The development of the alloy pursued the main goal, to create a material that has the advantages of aluminum and is devoid of its inherent disadvantages. The finished metal is an aluminum alloy made using a number of alloying elements (magnesium 1.5%, manganese 0.5%, copper not less than 4.4%).

Metal has a relatively low weight with higher strength compared to aluminum. In addition, duralumin to a lesser extent accumulates fatigue, and therefore is commonly used in aircraft and shipbuilding, in the manufacture of sports cars, bicycles and other products, where light weight, in combination with high strength is considered an important advantage.

So, after we have decided on the basic qualities of the production material, let us consider what properties the duralumin profile tube exhibits.

Production

Industrial production of duralumin with rectangular section

Instructions for the production of pipes using duralumin have been tested for half a century, and therefore finished products are obtained with guaranteed quality and meeting regulatory requirements. In the manufacture of such metal used cold deformation technology or stamping method.

Important: The quality of the finished product is determined not only by compliance with production technologies, but also by the method of final processing.

The increased static strength of the duralumin tube (at least 400 MPa) is ensured by the final aging and quenching. As a result of this treatment, the product acquires additional resistance to mechanical loads, increased viscosity and, as a result, resistance to fracture. Due to the final processing of the product, the consumed duralumin becomes a material with an optimal weight return. The specified strength properties are inherent to substances with a specific weight up to 2.8 t / m ?.

The main characteristics of pipes made of aluminum

Thin-walled clad pipe

Pipes made of duralumin are metal products with a number of unique qualities, among which the following properties should be noted:

  • high resistance to corrosive processes;
  • low weight;
  • ease of machining, despite the rigidity of the product;
  • high compressive and tensile strength (according to experts, the strength does not decrease with time, but on the contrary increases);
  • resistance to long-term exposure to high or low temperatures of the transported liquid medium;
  • acceptable price.

Duralumin-made pipe is a hollow profile with a wide range of cross-section diameters. The operational properties are largely determined by the method of production, chemical composition and state of the material.

This type of metal is made in accordance with the requirements of GOST 18482-79, GOST 23697-79 or GOST 18475-82. In the manufacture of pipes using aluminum alloy D16, the chemical composition of the material is determined in accordance with GOST 4784-97.

Classification

Duralumin pipes in the domestic market are represented by a wide list of various modifications that differ from each other in technical and operational characteristics.

In accordance with the applied production technologies, duralumin pipes are divided into the following categories:

  • unclaimed products;
  • products with normal plating;
  • products with technological plating.

In accordance with the state of the material, the following categories of duralumin differ:

  • hot-pressed without further heat treatment;
  • naturally aged and hardened.

Important: The structure of naturally aged and hardened products has no signs of burnout. Moreover, each product, at the end of heat treatment, passes the test for strength.

The most popular is thin-walled metal D16. These products are lightweight and high plasticity. Pipes of this type are perfectly cut, boiled and are the optimal choice for assembling structures with a complex configuration. (See also the Brass Tube article: Features.)

The use of cladding provides materials with additional corrosion resistance, while heat treatment contributes to an accelerated set of strength with rolled metal.

Dural pipes of the D16 brand in the market are presented by the following modifications:

  • D16 T - hardened modification;
  • D16AT - modifications with normal plating;
  • D16BT - modifications with technological plating.

Important: When choosing products from duralumin, it is necessary to take into account that annealing contributes to the plasticity of the material, while production using cold deformation provides pipes with increased hardness.

Marking

For ease of choice of duralumin tubes, special markings are used to indicate certain properties of rolled metal:

  • M - plastic and soft pipes;
  • H - uncharted pipes with low strength properties (such rolled products are not subjected to sealing knurling of the surface layer).
  • T - hardened modifications that have been subjected to natural aging.
  • T1 - hardened modifications that have been subjected to artificial aging.

Assortment

Most of the duralumin rolled with a round or square cross section is made using alloy D16.

All of this rental applies to either the thick-walled or thin-walled group of the assortment:

  • Thin-walled products have an average wall thickness of 0.5-5 mm with a diameter of 6-150 mm.
  • Thick-walled pipe characterized by a wall thickness in the range of 6-40 mm with a diameter of 30-300 mm.

Compliance of duralumin pipes with the parameters of the product range is governed by the requirements given in GOST 18482-79 and GOST 18475-82.
