How is pipe painting performed: suitable compositions and
Metal pipes are most needed to paint because they need to be protected from corrosion. However, sometimes it may be necessary for this procedure for plastic pipes, for example, to give them a suitable color. The coating technology of different types of materials, of course, differs, besides, it largely depends on the type of pipeline, for example, painting heating pipes requires a special approach to the choice of paintwork material.
In this article, we will look at how to pick up paint and paint pipelines of various types so that the result is of high quality and durable.
Paint selection
Primary requirements
So, when choosing a paint you need to focus on the following factors:
Material type | The coating must correspond to the material from which the pipes are made, otherwise it will peel off immediately after painting and all work will be in vain. |
Type of pipeline | If it is necessary to cover the pipes of heating or hot water supply, then the paintwork material must be heat resistant, otherwise it may turn yellow, peel or start to produce an unpleasant toxic smell. |
Environmental friendliness | If the procedure is planned indoors, then coverage should be safe for human health. |
Resistance to precipitation, ultraviolet radiation and negative temperatures | This requirement applies to painting exterior pipelines. |
Suitable formulations
Taking into account all these requirements, it is not difficult to choose the right composition, as the characteristics of paints are usually on the package (see also the article How to correctly use the socket connection of pipes).
As an example, we can recommend the following types of LPC:
- Alkyd enamel - provide a durable uniform coating resistant to elevated temperatures and mechanical stress. The disadvantages include an unpleasant smell, which will be felt in the room the first time after painting.
- Water dispersion formulations - they are good because they are absolutely odorless and dry quickly.
- Acrylic Enamel - will provide pipes with a rich glossy surface. The disadvantages include the strong smell of organic solvent in the painting process, but the material is resistant to abrasion.
Note! Painting of pipelines according to GOST 14202-69 is identifiable in nature. Of course, inside the premises it is not necessary to adhere to any norms, but they should be respected behind its chapels.
This is especially true of gas pipes, which must be painted yellow, which corresponds to this GOST.
Paint for plastic
When deciding how to paint plastic pipes, first of all you should pay attention to the type of plastic. The fact is that it will not be possible to paint products made of polyethylene and polypropylene at all, since any coloring composition will peel off from them.
If the plastic is made on the basis of ABS or PVC, then it can be painted, but first it is necessary to cover the adhesive primer.
Note! When choosing a paint for plastic, you should pay attention so that it does not have an organic solvent that can damage the product.
Material calculation
After you decide on the type of paintwork, it is necessary to calculate its quantity so that the material does not suddenly end up during painting or vice versa, there is not a lot of excess composition, because the price of good paint is always high.
Approximate consumption of coating per square meter can be obtained from the information from the manufacturer, which is indicated on the packaging. Therefore, it is only necessary to recall from the school curriculum how to calculate the area of the pipe for painting.
In fact, to perform such a calculation is very simple - the area of the pipe is equal to its length multiplied by the diameter and the number Pi. The only thing to consider is that the composition will be applied in two layers.
Procedure
Instructions for painting pipes as follows:
- If the surface has been painted, it should be removed. To simplify this work, you can heat the surface with a building dryer or use a solvent.
- After removing the old paint, metal pipes must be cleaned of rust using sandpaper or a metal brush.
- Next, the cleaned surface must be degreased, having processed the appropriate composition. The same goes for plastic pipes.
- Before painting, it is necessary to cover the floor and paste over all the surfaces adjacent to the pipes with masking tape.
- Then the painted pipe must be covered with a layer of primer, which will ensure good adhesion, in addition, it will allow the paint to go evenly. For metal surfaces, it is best to use alkyd primer. For plastic, you can use an acrylic primer.
- After the soil is dry, you can start your own hands directly to the painting. To do this, you need a thin brush with soft bristles or an airbrush.
When applying paint, it is necessary to ensure that it lays down in a uniform thin layer, without drips. Therefore, before applying the brush should be pressed against the wall of the jar or other special dishes.
- After complete drying of the first layer, it is necessary to put the second layer in the same way. As a rule, to obtain a quality result, painting in two layers is sufficient.
Note! Before painting the heating pipes, it is necessary to turn off the system, and even better to do the work in the warm season.
At this point, the painting process is complete, it remains only to wash the tool and wait until the composition dries.
Conclusion
It is absolutely not difficult to paint the pipeline yourself. The most important thing is to choose a suitable coloring composition that meets all the above requirements (read also the article Pipe rolling: technology and special tools).
For the rest, you just need to follow a certain sequence of actions and do the work as carefully as possible.
