How to get rid of the smell of sewage: methods
In each house there is a sewer system, which does not always work as it should. One of the main signs of malfunctioning of the domestic sewage system is an unpleasant odor that comes from the installation sites of plumbing fixtures and pipe laying. There are several reasons for the appearance of a musty smell and ways to eliminate it.
Siphon problem

Siphon in the sewer system plays a significant role. It is specially designed so that the smell is not transferred to the room in which it is installed. The closure in the initial part of the outlet creates a water plug, which does not let the odors through.

- If the siphon is installed incorrectly, it is not tightly connected to plumbing fixtures or pipes, then the gasket moves from its place, is lost during operation and there is an unpleasant smell in the kitchen or in the bathroom. If the siphon under the sink or sink is made of corrugated pipe, it needs to be given a V-shape, which must be fixed with a special strap, in extreme cases - with copper wire.
- Siphon can fail if there is a pressure drop in the sewer. If the system pressure is higher than atmospheric, air will be released from the sewage pipes to the outside and there will be an unpleasant smell in the kitchen, bathroom or toilet. After that, the siphon will fill the waste water and will continue to release unpleasant odors.
- If the cause of the problem is precisely in this, the sewage system should be cleaned with special compositions, to which the “Mole” special tool can be counted. In addition, you can apply plunger. At installation of branches from sanitary devices it is impossible to use pipes of smaller diameter, than it is recommended in each concrete situation.
- If the owners for a long time were absent from the dwelling and the system was not exploited. In this case, the water from the siphon just evaporates over time. To get rid of the smell, you just need to turn on the water to fill the valve.
Blockages
Due to improper use of sewage, blockages appear in pipes and siphons. Also blockages can occur due to laying pipelines at the wrong angle. Usually it should be approximately 0.02 mm per 1 m along the length of the pipe.
Tip! Do not drain plum with hair, tea, food fragments, fat. Their accumulation at the bottom of the siphon leads to abundant reproduction of bacteria, from which an unpleasant smell subsequently emanates.

- To get rid of these contaminants, it is necessary from time to time to clean the valve with a plunger. It is superimposed on the drain, the water is turned on and vigorous movements are made by the instrument in the vertical direction for as long as the siphon is free from impurities that have to go into the sewer.
- To rid the pipes of grease, which narrows the pipes in diameter, you can use a mixture of boiling water and dish liquid. Table soda also copes well with fat, which in the amount of 100 g should be poured into the sewer, then pour the same vinegar and plug the drain hole with a stopper. After 30 minutes, it is also necessary to add 0.5 liters of boiling water.
- To eliminate the smell, the pipe can be cleaned and plumbing cable. The siphon cap is unscrewed, a cable is inserted into the pipe and, at the same time, it is rotated clockwise. After dirt is coiled around the end of the cable, the tool is pulled out and cleaned. There are several approaches you can make. After that, the siphon cap is put in place. The quality of cleaning is checked by running tap water, preferably hot.
Crack in sewer pipe

If cracks are found in the sewer pipe and there is no time and money to replace, you can fix the problem at the local level.
- To eliminate leaks in the pipe in the bathroom under the sink or in the kitchen under the sink, you need to apply 2 collars, the diameter of which will correspond to the size of the cast-iron pipe, and a rubber sheet. A gasket is cut out of a piece of rubber, which should wrap the entire pipe in the problem area and with the help of clamps it is tightened in 2 places.
- If the sewer pipe is cracked elsewhere, for example, an unpleasant smell spreads in the toilet, repairs should be done in another way. It is necessary to cut pieces of a bandage with a length of 30 cm, soak them with a previously prepared cement solution and apply them in turn to the pipe, to the places where cracks have formed. The resulting cocoon must dry for a day, so water should not be flushed down the toilet for 24 hours.
Tip! These odor disposal measures are temporary - in any case, damaged sewer pipes will need to be replaced over time.
