Presenting a modern home without a sewage system is almost impossible. Bath, sink and toilet are available in each apartment or private house. But when creating such a system, it is necessary to think through every little thing. For example, getting rid of an unpleasant smell can be a problem. It is for these purposes and used sewer aerator. Such a device is not mandatory, but it is very often installed both in new homes and in ones that have been in operation for a long time.

Purpose and Benefits

The aerator helps to block the access of unpleasant smell from the sewage system into the living quarters. As a rule, siphons are used for these purposes, but they do not always cope with this task.

Vacuum valve

The fact is that during an abrupt descent of the toilet cistern or other large amounts of water entering the system, an overpressure is formed. As the liquid column moves through the system, the pressure in the riser rises. After drains reach the riser and rush down, a vacuum is formed in it. As a result of such pressure drops, unpleasant odors from the sewage system enter the premises.

To avoid such trouble, the riser is displayed on the roof. As a result, the pressure levels off. But if the riser in the upper part is clogged, then an unpleasant smell in the room cannot be avoided. To prevent this, and make installation of the aerator.

Installing an aerator offers some advantages. Namely:

  • will not let the sewer system freeze. The aerator prevents cold air from entering the system. This is most relevant in old houses, where there is no insulation of sewer pipes.
  • allows you to save money. At installation of the device need for creation of ventilating system disappears.
  • no need to install a fan pipe on the roof. This will save the roof from possible leaks.

How does it work

The action of the aerator in stages

To understand how the aerator copes with its tasks it is worth knowing its working principle. When a large amount of water is drained, a vacuum is created in the system. At this time, the aerator raises the stem with a membrane that opens the side holes. Through them, the missing air enters the sewage system and the pressure levels off.

After the water column has gone to the riser, the stem with the membrane is lowered. Side holes are blocked and the air stops flowing into the system. Thus, the aerator equalizes the pressure and does not allow unpleasant odors to enter the living quarters.

The principle of the device

Tip! Choosing an aerator, it is necessary to clarify the method of its installation. There are devices that can be mounted both in vertical risers and in horizontal sewer pipes. Also find out its power (how much air it can pass per unit of time), in this regard it is better not to skimp and choose more powerfully.

Installation

If you decide to install an aerator in your house or apartment, then you should know some rules:

  • first, the device must be in a room with a temperature not lower than zero;
  • secondly, the installation site should be easily accessible for inspection and device replacement;
  • thirdly, the aerator itself is inserted into the socket of the sewer pipe.

Tip! When installing it is necessary to take into account the fact that the aerator should be located strictly vertically. The installation site must be at least ten centimeters above the point of maximum discharge. If there is a floor grate for a catchment in the room, the device should be mounted at least 35 cm above the floor.

Installation of the aerator

Modern aerators can be installed almost anywhere. Very often the device can be found in the bathroom, toilet or in the kitchen. Also, if the riser goes into the attic, the aerator is mounted directly on the riser pipe.

If you decide to install the device in your home, then there is no need to call a specialist. All installation work can be completely done on its own.

Possible locations

Installation of the aerator is as follows:

  1. First of all, turn off the water in order not to make a small flood during installation.
  2. Disconnect the sewer pipe. This applies to the case when the installation is carried out in a horizontal plane. If the aerator is installed on the riser, then you do not need to disconnect anything.
  3. If you mount the device on a pipe that drains sewage from plumbing fixtures, then you need to choose the right direction for installation. The installation scheme in this case will look as follows: there is an arrow on the case of the aerator, which should coincide with the direction of movement of the drains.
  4. Then we assemble the aerator and install it using sealing rings (and following the instructions for the device).

As you can see, the installation of the aerator is an easy task. Such a device is inexpensive, but it benefits a lot, because it will not allow the penetration of an unpleasant smell into the house.
