Pipes

When installing sewer systems, in addition to pipes of the required diameter, you need to use a lot of additional elements. Most often the connecting coupling for pipes of the sewerage is necessary. It allows to provide the necessary level of tightness and durability in places of joints.

Coupling - an important element of the sewage system

Couplings and their use for installation of sewage

Connector classification

Couplings are special parts of the sewer pipeline, which serve to connect its individual elements.

They are of two main types:

  • sewer coupling for mounting an internal sewage system;
  • the connecting element intended for operation out of residential and office buildings.

As for the size, it naturally depends on the diameter of the pipes used. The most common products with a diameter of 50 and 110 mm. But there are other varieties, depending on the scope. (See also the article Sewage in the cottage: features.)

Another important classification criterion is connection types:

  1. Threaded. It is used for docking drainage systems of small diameter. Often pipes with such connections are installed under the kitchen sink or sink.
  2. With rubber ring. A very common type of connection, widely used in the installation of sewer systems. Its advantages are quick and easy installation without the use of special tools or additional materials.

  1. On glue. In this case, the coupling has neither a thread nor a special rubber seal. To ensure the tightness of the connection helps a special glue. This method can not be applied in places where the pipes will sag.
  2. Using welding. The most durable compound. It can be applied both to metal, and to plastic pipes. The disadvantage is the need to use special equipment. When installing the systems with their own hands, welding is almost never used.

The material for the manufacture of the considered elements of sewage disposal systems are:

  • polyvinyl chloride;
  • polypropylene;
  • polyethylene;
  • steel;
  • cast iron;
  • copper and so on.

Special mention is a rubber coupling for sewage. It is used for joining system elements made of various materials (for example, plastic and cast iron).

Tip! If you plan to independently install the sewage system, stop on PVC pipes and couplings with a joint for the sealing ring. They are distinguished by an affordable price and excellent technical characteristics.

Advantages of PVC Couplings

Previously, sewage systems were made of cast iron using metal compounds. Fastening was done using electric welding.

Today, plastic is always used to design sewage drainage systems. This has a beneficial effect on both cost and reliability.

Let us dwell on the advantages of connecting products made of PVC.

Advantage Description
Low weight This is a very important indicator. The ease of individual elements and the entire finished system facilitates the delivery of materials, their assembly and fixing.
Long period of operation The guaranteed service life of the used elements is from 40 to 50 years. The material used in their manufacture is not susceptible to the destructive action of ultraviolet radiation, water, temperature changes and perfectly tolerates an aggressive chemical environment. In addition, PVC couplings are never overgrown with corrosive deposits, which often happened with cast iron products.
Easy installation To connect pipes using couplings do not need to use welding or other equipment. The fastening instructions are simple - you should firmly insert one part into another. It does not require the participation of an experienced plumber.

Special couplings

Fire fighting

Another element without which the sewage system should not be operated is fire-resistant couplings that prevent the spread of open flame through pipelines.

This device is a metal cylinder with a special liner. The latter consists of a special non-combustible material, swelling under the influence of elevated ambient temperature.

The actuated fire sewer coupling seals the pipeline, preventing further spread of fire.

This part must necessarily be installed on each plastic pipe in the building and secured to the solid wall or ceiling. Installation of them does not cause difficulties and can be made at any stage of construction work.

Tip! Fire couplings for sewage are an effective means of preventing the spread of fire in a residential building. When building a country house or repairing an apartment, you should not neglect the installation of this element. Small savings now can lead to huge damage from fire in the future.

When buying a product for protection against fire, you should make sure that the product conforms to accepted standards and has the appropriate certificate issued by regulatory authorities. Otherwise, its effectiveness will be zero.

Coupling for repair

The special elements used in the process of installation of sewage systems include the repair coupling. It is slightly longer than standard fittings and is used to replace damaged sections of the pipeline, as well as tie-in additional fittings.

Coupling with an extended bell

The order of work with the use of special accessories is as follows:

  • the pipe is cut in the right place (or the damaged area is cut);
  • A special repair element is put on the lower end (its external cut must be pushed until it is equal to the end of the pipe);
  • a sleeve with an elongated bell is put on the upper end in the same way;
  • the necessary shaped part is inserted (or the intact section of the pipeline);
  • then the sleeve with the extended socket is moved downwards, and the repair one - upwards, as a result of which all parts are joined together.
Repair nadvizhny coupling

The inserted section of pipe (for repairs) should be properly processed. To do this, the chamfer is removed from the ends, after which they are processed with technical grease. This ensures the complete absence of leakage after repair.

In particularly difficult cases, maximum efficiency can be achieved by pumping silicone sealant couplings into the ends. After its hardening, no leakage is possible.

Conclusion

When purchasing couplings, make sure that there are no cracks on their surface. Check the ends carefully. In the event of a cleavage, it will be impossible to achieve tightness of the installed sewer system without replacing the damaged part.
