Installing a siphon in the kitchen
Siphon is one of the key components in the water flow system. It connects the kitchen sink with sewer. This sanitary device is made in the form of a flask or a bent tube. Installing a siphon in the kitchen does not require calling a plumber. For work you need only a screwdriver and free time.
Purpose of the device

Each element of the sewer system has its own purpose, the siphon performs several functions simultaneously:
- detains garbage and food waste, preventing pipe clogging;
- The water in the appliance plays the role of a water seal, which prevents the spread of unpleasant odors and hazardous sewage gases.
Design features

Siphons differ in appearance and design:
- The bottle-type device has a rigid structure, in the bottom of its bulb is a sump, and the outlet tube is located in the middle. This siphon has a neat appearance and is easily unwound for purification.
- The tubular model is made of rigid plastic or metal pipe. The design is durable, but requires free space and is poorly cleaned.
- The corrugated siphon is made of a movable plastic pipe using a simple bend of the knee and fixing it with a hose clamp. This model is characterized by mobility, but the folds of the corrugations are quickly clogged with fat and debris.
Materials for the manufacture of the device

The device is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), copper alloys of brass and bronze, propylene. PVC is the most affordable option. It can be used for 5 years, but periodically washed with hot water. The propylene siphon is the best choice for the kitchen - it is durable, not afraid of corrosion and chemical attack. Brass models are not often installed because of the high cost, they are presentable, but less reliable than their polymer counterparts.
Preparatory work

Before buying a new siphon, it is necessary to measure the diameter of the nozzle, it may differ from the common section of 32 mm and have a size of 40 or 50 mm. Before you assemble the siphon, you must check the availability of all parts and their condition.
The product is transported in a soft container, but if it is carelessly handled, cracks and chips are formed on it.
The spent siphon is dismantled after loosening the screw holding the release. Under the sink, you must put a bucket for the water running out or cover the floor with a rag. After removing the end of the pipe from the sewer hole, the old device is removed to the side. The joints are cleaned of dirt and sealant residue. If necessary, change the sealing ring in the sewer socket, then close the opening with a rag.
Siphon installation

There is enough space under the sink to install and connect the device without any problems. We will understand how to install it for washing. If a bottle model is used, the installation is carried out in three stages:
- connection of the appliance with the sink;
- siphon housing assembly;
- connection with sewer pipe.
Work begins with fixing the nozzle on the sink. To do this, from the side of the sink, a white gasket and a drain grate are placed in the hole. A quality product lies flush with the hole, if the grill protrudes, then it is better to remove the gasket. At the top of the drain pipe you need to put a thick gasket and lubricate it with sealant. Tightly attach the top and bottom and tighten the screw provided. In the process of connection it is impossible to move the gasket from its place, so that later there is no leakage.

When assembling the flask, a large flat gasket is put on the lower part of the body and the lid is screwed on. The connection should be tight, but be careful not to break the thread.
It is not necessary to treat this joint with sealant, because during operation the cap is unscrewed for washing. The pipe connected to the sink must be attached to the flask. For this purpose, a clamping nut and a tapered gasket are put on its edge, its sharp side is located to the thread. The nozzle is inserted into the upper hole of the siphon and the put-on nut is tightly twisted.
The next step is to connect to the sewage system. The easiest way is to take a corrugated pipe with two rigid ends. Docking is performed using a tapered gasket and a plastic clamping nut, the thread can be lubricated with silicone sealant. In the second end of the corrugations is inserted the sealing ring sewer.
If there is a difference in the size of the drainage of the siphon and the sewer pipe, a special cuff is installed, having different diameters on both sides.
It remains to check the device for tightness. Before turning on the water is to substitute a bucket for safety. If there is no leak, then the work is done well and the device will reliably serve you for several years.
