Installation of a check valve on the sewer

Sewage

The sewage system is designed to improve the comfort of living, but sometimes it can bring a lot of trouble. For example, a blockage in one place will cause a real flood in another. It is very unpleasant when an unpleasantly smelling slur flowing out of a toilet bowl spreads throughout the apartment. To guard against this misfortune, it is advisable to install such a device as a check valve. It will not allow drains to get back to your apartment. We will talk about how to install a check valve on the sewage system in this article.

The device and the principle of operation of the valve

Valve device

Living in apartment buildings, you are unlikely to be able to control everything that goes into the sewer system. For this reason, blockages will not be uncommon. If you live on the third floor or above, then the drains are unlikely to reach you (if the neighbors did not put a trap on the bottom). But what do the residents of the first floor, because they most often face the problem of leakage of sewage from the toilet, sink or bath. To prevent drains from getting into your apartment, install a sewage check valve.

Such a device is designed to block the movement of fluid through the pipeline in one direction. The valve consists of a body equipped with a lid; it is necessary for cleaning the device. Inside is a membrane with a lever.

The principle of the sewage check valve

If the drains go in the opposite direction, then the membrane will block the lumen of the pipe and prevent sewage from passing to the plumbing fixtures. When removing the blockage, the air pressure returns the lever and the membrane itself to its normal position.

On sale you can find check valves for sewage of two types:

  1. With a large cross-section. Such devices are installed at the entrance of the apartment sewage into the overall system. A valve with a large cross section will prevent the entry of sewage if a blockage appears in the main riser or in the main pipeline.
  2. Devices with a small section. Such valves are installed directly in front of each sanitary unit. They protect you from blockages in any part of the sewer system.

The first option is placed in private homes. Installing a check valve of large cross section in apartment buildings is rather problematic, since access to the entire system is very limited. Another thing is the valves for each plumbing fixture; it is easy to assemble such devices with your own hands, and it does not require coordination with utilities.

Before installation, choose the right place. It is important to take into account the availability of space, because the valve needs constant monitoring and preventive cleaning.

Buying a device, you should not consider only the price indicator. Very often a cheap item is not the best quality. It is worth remembering that valve failure at the most inopportune moment can lead to large expenses for the repair of the entire apartment. Before installing the valve it is worth checking its tightness, if the test results are unsatisfactory, then leakage cannot be avoided.

Also when choosing a tip on how to install a check valve. In most cases, such devices are universal, but models are available that are intended only for horizontal or vertical pipes. Of course, do not forget about the diameter of the device. This parameter should correspond to the cross-section of the sewer pipe.

The installation itself is as follows:

  • At the installation site, the pipe is cut to the length of the valve itself.
  • The device is connected to the system like ordinary sewage pipes. If cast iron elements are used, then it is necessary to install an adapter from metal to plastic.
  • When installing, you should follow the direction of the arrow on the body. This index should be directed towards the release.
  • After installation, seal the joints with silicone sealant.

After that, the device can be used. If during operation, vibration and loud noise have occurred, then this is a sign of poor membrane tightness. Such a problem is solved by replacing this element.

Using

Vacuum valve installed

If the house has two or more floors, it is desirable to install a non-return air valve. This device will provide disposal of excess noise and will not let unpleasant smells get into the apartment.

Air check valve helps equalize pressure. The membrane releases air into the environment at an elevated pressure in the system, and lets it in if the pressure drops.

The air check valve is installed only in a warm room. The device can be installed both on top of the riser and directly in front of a certain sanitary unit. In this case, the minimum installation height should be considered. If the room has a floor drain, the valve is mounted to a height of at least 35 cm.
