The laid-on sink for a bathroom or kitchen is quite capable to become the real decoration of an interior of your house. And although such products are not as common as mortise, their range is wide enough so that you are guaranteed to be able to choose a suitable model.

If you mount such a product instead of a standard sink, you will receive a unique piece of furniture.

Advantages and disadvantages of overhead products

A typical kitchen solution is a mortise sink, the main part of which is located below the countertop level. And in bathrooms, similar constructions are usually used, with the only difference that sometimes the sink is mounted not on a pedestal, but on a vertical support (the so-called “tulip”).

Single support construction

At the same time recently in the interior design more and more often there are surface-mounted car washes. Their base is installed either on a special support frame or directly on the worktop.

What are the advantages of such a solution?

  • First of all, the absence of a joint with the table top provides protection from leakage. Yes, bathroom furniture with a counter sink is usually made of moisture-resistant materials, but still minimal contact with the saw cuts with water helps to increase the service life.
  • Secondly, the installation process of such products is much simpler than the installation process mortise designs. All work can be done by hand using a minimum set of tools.
Decorative bronze construction
  • Thirdly, such models, especially overhead colored shells, look very attractive. With the right approach to interior planning, you can make a sink a central object of the entire design.

As for the cons, they also have:

  • Firstly, the price of such products is slightly higher than that of standard mortise models. Moreover, the most qualitative and interesting in design models belong to the premium segment, so optimizing costs will not work here.
  • Secondly, from a practical point of view, the design somewhat loses the mortise washes. This is due to the fact that when performing any operation, we will cling to the projecting sides.

Note! This does not apply to products that are made as one with a small table top. In this case, the base under the shell sink is made without the upper part, since the sink itself completely covers the plane.

Design and installation

Main varieties

Dimensions and mounting options

If we talk about the range, such shells can be divided according to several criteria.

The design is usually represented by two options:

  • The first is a hemispherical or oval container, which is installed on top of the tabletop, in contact with it only at the discharge point.
  • The second is a full-size sink, which is a monolith of a fragment of a tabletop and a bowl. Such a square sink is usually mounted on a cabinet without a lid.

The variety of materials is also very large:

Products from faience
  • Ceramic products - the cheapest. They have a good margin of safety. But in the kitchen they should not be used, otherwise chips will quickly appear on the surface.
  • Models of heat strengthened glass - one of the most popular, and therefore the most expensive. They are much stronger than the faience, so it can be used in the kitchen.
  • Metal (copper and bronze) also can not be attributed to the budget segment. The main advantage of metal shells is their resistance to mechanical damage.
  • Stone (composite, natural granite, marble) - the most expensive models. Practically not exposed to chemicals, combine an attractive appearance and excellent performance.

Note! Sinks made of natural and artificial stone weigh quite a lot, and therefore the cabinet for the counter sink in the bathroom must have adequate strength.

Installation Method

In most cases, the installation is carried out by the organization from which you bought the products (the high cost of the material contributes to this very much), but in principle, the overhead washing can be installed independently. Especially since there are no special difficulties here.

Installed design

The instruction is:

  • Initially, the cabinet is assembled for the wall-mounted sink in the bathroom and kitchen. To avoid damage, it is advisable to fix the structure on the floor or on the wall with the help of corner brackets.
  • If we have chosen the model of the sink, which is placed on the table top, then we apply a marking on the upper plane to make a drain hole.

Note! You may also need to drill the groove for mounting the mixer.

  • We install the bowl on the table top, combining its drain with the hole made earlier. If the design of the product is envisaged, seal the lower abutment line with silicone.
  • Next, install the siphon outlet nipple, tightening the fastening of the mesh in the drain. This mount will press the entire structure to the tabletop.
  • We collect inside the cabinets siphon, providing a drain connection to the sewer.
The sink occupies the entire top.

As for the overhead models that occupy the entire upper part of the cabinet, they are fastened even easier:

  • We put the product on the guides, on which the L-shaped mounting plates have been previously installed.
  • Carefully seal all joints.
  • Fix the sink on the mounts.
  • We connect the siphon, and then through a special hole (if it is provided for by the construction) we fix the mixer.

Conclusion

A round, square or oval surface sink can dramatically change the look of your bathroom or kitchen. Of course, such products are somewhat more expensive than traditional mortise models, but they are quickly assembled without the use of special tools, and they serve for a long time and regularly.
