What sizes of sinks are optimal for a city apartment? What are the minimum dimensions of a sink or washbasin, allowing you to wash dishes and wash without discomfort? What are these products made of? Are there any modifications of the sinks that allow more economical use of the space of the room? Let's figure it out.

Our task is to choose the optimal solution.

Dimensions

Optimum

Let's start with determining the optimal dimensions.

  • Comfortable width range - from 50 to 65 cm. A sink 45 cm or less in width will mean permanent splashes on the walls at the side. A sink of 70 cm or more is a wasteful use of space, which is usually in short supply in a city apartment.
Sink 90 cm wide. The size is clearly redundant.
  • The depth (distance from the wall to the front edge) should ideally be 48 - 61 cm. A sink that is 35 cm deep and with the mixer taps fully open will, again, spray you with a fan; increasing the distance from wall to edge makes you lean towards the mixer.

By the way: a simple test will help you to choose a sink or sink in depth. If you stand close to the edge and stretch your arm forward, it should fall on the lever or taps of the mixer, without forcing you to bend or bend the elbow joint.

  • The height of the sink bowl (the distance from the bottom to the edge vertically) should be 45 - 55 cm for the sink and 25 - 35 cm for the washbasin. In the second case, it is better to use a mixer with a short fixed gander, the jet of which will beat directly into the outlet: otherwise you will be guaranteed unwanted water procedures.
  • The height of the installation (distance from the edge of the sink to the floor) in the case of washing in the kitchen is usually determined by the height of the kitchen unit and the stove. It is typically 85 cm. But it is better to install the washbasin in the bathroom with your hands at a height of 90 cm: this value is optimal for a person of average height.

Minimum

Instructions for choosing a miniature sink is relevant for the owners of premises of very small area or heavily cluttered bathrooms and kitchens.

  • Sink 35 - 35 cm will allow relatively comfortable to wash under a weak stream of water. A reasonable minimum size for a kitchen sink is somewhat larger - 40x40; while large pots or pans will have to be washed in a bath or shower.
Compact washbasin does not provide much comfort.
  • A sink with a depth of 20 cm with the same or slightly larger width is a compact washstand for a toilet. And here you can only use mixers with a fixed short gander - otherwise the entire room will be flooded with water.
  • A 30 cm high sink will allow you to wash most of the dishes. But for a washbasin, the requirements are much more democratic: on sale you can find products with a distance from the bottom to the edge of just 10 - 12 cm.

For large rooms

Owners of cottages are much freer than the inhabitants of apartment buildings in terms of the use of free space; however, the limiting factor in most cases is not the size of the bathroom, but human anatomy. A 120 cm wide sink for one person is simply useless, and a 100 cm deep sink will also be extremely inconvenient to use.

The exception is wide washbasins designed for simultaneous use by two or more people. However, such products are significantly more expensive than a combination of two or three sinks of a more modest size.

Materials

What are the sanitary appliances we are interested in?

Washbasins

Material Key features
Faience Cheapness; resistance to aggressive detergents; porous surface quickly collecting pollution
Porcelain The price of the material is somewhat higher than that of faience. For his money, the buyer gets a much smoother surface, which practically does not collect dirt and lime deposits.
Glass A transparent or translucent sanitary appliance is beautiful, but, unlike ceramics, it does not hide communications and requires keeping the surface in perfect condition. Any dirt on the glass looks extremely untidy
Artificial stone (polymer concrete) The material is a stone crumb (80% of the volume) and the binder is an acrylic resin. It is easy to polish and can be repaired when chipped. The reverse side of maintainability is low scratch resistance and high (over 150 - 200 C) temperatures.
Porcelain stoneware The clay that has passed through high-temperature roasting is resistant to any chemistry, is extremely durable and withstands temperature changes in the widest range. It is possible to damage the ceramic granite washbasin only with a strong blow; however, such damage will be irreversible.

Besides the popular materials listed by us, under the order you can offer:

  • Washbasins made of copper or bronze, stylized antique.
The material is bronze.
  • Products from a natural stone.
  • Shells made of natural wood of noble species, treated with water-repellent compositions.

The cost and the impracticality of these products make them niche solutions that have value rather as a design element than a commonplace.

Car wash

Exotic, of course, exists in this sector of the market; However, the most massive:

  1. Stainless steel. She won a large part of the market sector for nothing: unlimited service life and resistance to any conceivable effects — chemical and mechanical — combined with reasonable cost make stainless steel the absolute leader in consumer qualities.
Stainless steel - the leader in basic consumer qualities.
  1. Polymer concrete.
  2. Porcelain tiles.

The last two materials, we recall, are afraid of strong blows and related chips and cracks. A fall from the shelf of a cast iron pan is likely to force you to pay a hefty sum for a new sink.

In pursuit of compactness

As the unforgettable Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov used to say through the words of one of his heroes, the housing problem only spoiled them. Lack of space in the apartment is the main problem of the inhabitants of the city. Fortunately, the current market can offer several ways to save it with minimal damage to comfort.

Corner

Even a 30 cm wide sink, placed in the corner of the bathroom, will be much more practical to use than a 40 cm washbasin adjacent to a straight wall. It is enough to protect the walls with tiles, to seal the junction - and the inevitable splashes will drain into the bowl, not forcing you to do the cleaning after each washing.

The angular location allows you to do smaller.

Above the washing machine

Sink 50 cm deep can perfectly fit above the washing machine. It is enough only to transfer its drain to the back side of the bowl and reduce the height of the product to a minimum.

Nuance: it is better to use these devices with washing machines of small height. Otherwise, the wash basin will have to be lifted up to a meter or more, which will be inconvenient for a short person.

In the photo in a compact bathroom I managed to place a full-size washbasin and a washing machine.

Combined with toilet cistern

Another interesting solution is the location of the washstand in the lid of the toilet bowl. It allows you to provide visitors of the toilet with the opportunity to wash their hands without suffering from cluttering the compact room with an additional sanitary fixture.
