What to do - if the water runs in the toilet: how to repair

Sewage

Tariffs for utilities, including water, are constantly rising. To reduce costs to a minimum, it is necessary to keep all sanitary appliances connected to the water supply system in good condition. And if you constantly runs water in the toilet, the problem must be solved immediately.

Especially since you can do it yourself, without the help of experts.

Constantly flowing water from the tank spends not only nerves, but also money

Causes of faults

The toilet bowl is a rather complicated sanitary device consisting of a bowl and a flush cistern. The latter serves for the accumulation of water coming from the water supply system and its quick discharge into the bowl on command from a mechanical lever or button.

For all these processes, valves are placed in the tank. It depends on its serviceability that water runs from the tank to the toilet all the time or only on your team.

Tip! It is possible to correct problems with drain fittings in the tank only if they are minor. Otherwise it is recommended to replace the mechanism completely. Its price is much less than the amount of money that you pay for plumbing without the need for a toilet.

The most common cause of failure is improperly working drain fittings.

The most common problems are:

  • water constantly enters the tank through the inlet pipe to which the water supply pipe is attached;
  • the liquid all the time flows into the bowl of the toilet bowl through the sealing membrane;
  • water is discharged from the storage tank only after a few taps on the button or lifting the lever;
  • the tightness of the drainage tank is broken (the toilet bowl is running);
  • water from the water supply is too noisy;
  • there was a leak in the toilet bowl itself.

Depending on why water runs constantly in the toilet, you need to start repairing:

  • the tank itself;
  • Bowls of sanitary device.

Let us consider in more detail both options.

The toilet bowl can be the culprit

Troubleshooting

Cistern

So, what to do - if the toilet runs, but you do not want to call the plumber and pay him for the work?

Specific instructions for eliminating trouble with a tank or drain fittings depend on what caused the problem:

  1. Skewed rocker float. You just need to fix the wire on which it is attached. It is also advisable to adjust the water level. Normally, the liquid should not reach the inlet of the tank at 2-2.5 centimeters.
  2. Impaired float tightness. In this case, water enters the device, as a result of which it becomes heavier and incorrectly performs the functions assigned to it.

Coping with trouble is quite simple. It is necessary to remove the float, get rid of the liquid that has fallen into it, seal the hole and install the device back.

To get rid of the leak can be as follows:

  • heat up a piece of polymer and close up a hole in the float;
  • put some plastic bags on the device and secure them with a rubber band.

Note! The measures described above are temporary. If you find a leak in the float, you must urgently purchase a new valve or repair kit and fix the damage. Otherwise, the overrun of tap water can not be avoided.

  1. Problems with the discharge of water (for draining you need to repeatedly press a special button or pull the lever). The reason for this is a failure of the siphon sealing membrane. You can, of course, clean it, but it is better to replace the leaky node with a new one.

This is done as follows:

  • the lid of the cistern is removed, after which a small wooden bar is put on the tank, which will serve as a support;
  • a rocker holding the float is tied to the crossbeam with the help of a reliable twine;
  • the water in there is drained from the storage tank (of course, before that you need to cut off the fluid inlet from the water main with the help of appropriate stop valves);
  • unscrew the nut that fixes the flush pipe that goes from the cistern to the toilet bowl;
  • siphon fasteners are loosened, after which the entire structure is removed from the tank;
  • the failed membrane is pulled out, and a new part is put in its place (it must be ensured that it exactly matches the old one in size and shape);
  • the drain mechanism of the tank is installed in place, the rope is untied from the float and the tank lid is fixed.
Leaky drainage membrane needs to be replaced with a new one.
  1. The flush button does not work completely. It is necessary to fix the cravings that have failed. It can be temporarily replaced with a piece of thick wire, but it is better to purchase a new one in the plumbing shop. So you will ensure the longest functioning of the restored toilet bowl.
If the toilet button does not work, fix the broken traction.
  1. Noisy filling tank. The sounds emitted by the liquid depend on the design of the container. It is advisable to take care of this at the stage of buying a toilet bowl, preferring models with lower liner.

However, if the noise prevents you from sleeping normally, you can design a simple muffler on your own.

This is done like this:

  • purchased flexible polymer tube of suitable diameter;
  • it is installed vertically in a container near the entrance to the float valve;
  • the upper end of the tube should be above the water, the lower - under it.

If the tricks described above did not help, you will have to purchase a stabilizing float valve or replace the old drain fittings with more modern versions.

To fill the tank without noise, buy toilets with a lower water supply

Toilet bowl

Breakdowns of the toilet bowl are extremely rare. And most of them are caused by a violation of the installation of the device: improper preparation of the base, too weak anchorages, and so on.

Tip! Errors in installing a sanitary device affect not only the quality of its work, but also safety. The “dancing” toilet can break and cause injury to the person who used it. Be sure to fix problems as soon as possible.

To avoid leakage of the toilet bowl, follow the rules of its installation.

Possible causes of leaks related to the toilet bowl are as follows:

  • the sealing pear of the drain mechanism is loosely attached to the drain valve;
  • toilet seat damaged by rust and lost tightness;
  • incorrectly adjusted rocker holding valve;
  • the density of the joint between the drain tank and the bowl is broken.

In all these cases, you should either replace or compact one or another node.

Conclusion

If all the problems described above are identified and eliminated, and a puddle under the toilet continues to appear, then the problem is most likely in the improper installation of the liner - the hose connecting the water supply to the tank inlet (see also the article The toilet bowl does not hold water - how to troubleshoot) .
