What to do when the toilet is leaking
Who among us does not remember the moment when you realize that it is impossible to stop the water from the tank running down the toilet? You start trying to fix the situation somehow, but nothing happens. Constant noise coming under the pressure of the water can still somehow be removed by closing the valve on the tank or bending the holder of the float so that it will block its access.
But, from this moment it is necessary to use a bucket, which is very inconvenient.
The time has come to find out what to do if the toilet bowl is leaking and how to quickly deal with such a problem. The good condition of plumbing not only allows not to notice her work, but also removes a lot of trouble from us. One of them is a large water flow, which can gradually turn into a significant amount if you have its meter installed.
Because of what happens in the cistern of the toilet bowl
Let's consider why water is leaking in the toilet, what reasons may affect the correct operation of the device:
New plumbing | In this case, the main possible cause is often the improper assembly or adjustment of the tank filling mechanism, as well as the discharge of water. |
If plumbing more than six months | The accessories failed because of the poor quality of materials, due to which the water supply and discharge mechanism broke. However, such breakdowns occur very rarely in the first years of service. Usually this can happen after about 3 years, when the plastic becomes more fragile and due to a sharp drop in water when draining, it can be damaged. |
If the tank is flowing
After the discovery of this problem, there is only one desire - to eliminate it as soon as possible (also read the article Cuff for toilet: how to choose a suitable part and install it).
This failure can be determined using two methods:
- disassemble the tank and examine the mechanism for the presence of defects (workings, cracks);
- try to deal with the shut-off valve.
The instruction is as follows:
- Shut off the water supply completely to the tank.
- Watch for some time over the leak.
- When a few minutes later the water stopped leaking, and it still remained in the tank for the descent, it means you or:
- improper adjustment of the float mechanism;
- Automatic level maintenance system is clogged.
- If the water from the tank goes to its complete emptying, look for the cause in the drain valve.
He can either:
- clog up;
- fail due to various reasons.
Eliminate the leak when the culprit is a float, it is not always necessary to disassemble the tank. You can properly adjust with your own hands the pressure of the water that passes through the filling valve.
Tip: do not forget that in any design the filler valve is very sensitive to the pressure in the water mains.
If the pressure in the plumbing system is high, it is necessary to cover the valve more, because the float simply cannot reliably close it. As a result, it will be heated, and the water will begin to merge into the toilet through the overflow mouth.
When the toilet bowl is leaking from the bottom - the drain valve is to blame, in this case, most often the repair will begin with the disassembly of the tank. However, before this, try to flush the water several times in a row, intensively stirring the drain key.
It is possible that the toilet is leaking after draining due to solid salt deposits that have accumulated and wedged the mechanism. Due to the intensive flushing of the tank, you can wash away the accumulated debris.
Solve the problem yourself
The mechanism for flushing the toilet bowl is not difficult, and you can fix it yourself even without instructions. Its repair and subsequent adjustment is carried out according to such typical principles.
So, if water is constantly leaking from the toilet bowl, do the following:
- Shut off the water supply to the tank by shutting off the tap and disconnecting the flexible hose from it.
- Empty the tank and carefully dismantle the valve mechanism with the float.
Tip: do not rush to disassemble it into parts, the node must be removed entirely.
- Conduct a careful visual inspection of the site, determining the principle of its operation. Also pay attention to the lack of workings and cracks in moving joints, for example, in pins, holes and "elevator". Take a critical look at the salt deposits that appear, representing rust and hard debris. In most cases, they are the cause of poor sealing of the valves, as well as jamming of the mechanism.
- Keep in mind that the plastic in the tank often cracks, and metal fittings "overgrown" with oxides.
Therefore, the principle of repair they are significantly different:
- metal parts can be cleaned, hoping to resume their performance;
- after detection of cracks in the polymer node needs to be completely replaced.
Drain valve
If after:
- thorough cleaning;
- blowing air channels of the mechanism designed to regulate the water level;
- reverse installation;
- experimenting with node tuning,
the water in the toilet still flows, you need to look for the cause in a strong clogging of the valve itself or in its increased output.
The latter case may occur due to the partial rupture of rubber or silicone pads, as well as the loss of their elasticity. Carry out the disassembly of the valve assembly with caution, and also record, sketch, or photograph from which place the parts were removed. Elastic elements are difficult to purchase separately, so it is easier to buy a new node, the price of which is quite affordable.
Also, the tank leak due to the drain valve in many cases can occur due to its deformation during the "aging" of the polymer from the action of water. Alignment or repair only lead to temporary success, we recommend replacing the entire node.
Conclusion
If a toilet cistern leak was detected, it can be fixed by yourself. To do this, adjust the water supply valve and adjust the level of the float, which can be strayed from water hammer with a sudden change in water pressure in the supply line (see also the article Lid for toilet bowl with microlift - features and device).
When this does not lead to anything - repair the assembly with disassembling it or simply replace it with a new one. The video in this article will provide an opportunity to find additional information on the above topic.
