Water supply

The problem of drinking water treatment has to face not only citizens, but also residents of rural areas. So that the water from the well was really high quality, suitable for drinking, it must be filtered. However, this is no big deal, then we will look at how to make a water filter from the well with your own hands.

The filter for water purification from a well

Why is it necessary to filter well water

Many people, when they hear about the need to filter well water, come to bewilderment. It would seem that cleaner well water, which is so praised in the epics, nothing can be.

However, modern reality looks quite different - the water in private wells may be contaminated with a number of substances:

  • Nitrates;
  • Bacteria and all sorts of pathogens;
  • Impurities that degrade the quality and taste of drinking water.

Some pollutants can cause significant harm to health by ingestion with drinking water. Therefore, in many cases, filtration of well water is simply necessary.

Pollution of the aquifer occurs for various reasons. For example, the fact that drinking water is an excess of nitrates is the fault of agrarians, who abundantly use pesticides and fertilizers when growing crops. Some of these substances penetrate aquifers.

Water before and after filtration

Bacteria and dangerous microorganisms may appear in the water due to the fact that sanitary and hygienic standards are not observed during the construction of toilets, manure and cesspools. Damage to the equipment or its low quality leads to the presence of impurities of rust, sand and other elements in the water. For these reasons, you must perform at least the simplest filter for well water.

Types of filtration materials

The principle of operation of any filter is extremely simple - water passes through the filtering material, which retains all pollutants.

The filler can be used a variety of materials:

  • Vata;
  • The cloth;
  • Paper napkins;
  • Sand;
  • Gauze;
  • Lutraxyl;
  • Coal.

It must be said that filters made of cotton wool, gauze, fabrics and other similar materials cope with the task quite effectively, however, they are very short-lived. Therefore, they can be used as a temporary option, for example, for one-time water purification.

Charcoal filter

For long-term use of the filter, most often, charcoal is used in conjunction with other filtration materials. It is layered and alternated with gravel, sand and grass.

Lutraxyl is also sometimes used with charcoal, a synthetic material made from polypropylene fibers.

Tip! Making charcoal yourself is not at all difficult - it is necessary to calcine pieces of wood in a metal container. It should be borne in mind that softwood is not suitable. In addition, you can buy ready-made coal in a store with goods for picnics, the price for it is quite affordable.

Making a filter

It is not always convenient to use ordinary household filters for well water. The fact is that these devices require a constant flow of water under a certain pressure. But, not every cottage is equipped with running water, which meets all these requirements.

Of course, there is another option - use a purchased jug-filter for water purification, however, cleaning in this case will be quite slow.

In addition, the jug requires constant replacement of the cartridge. Therefore, the best option would be to use a homemade filter from a plastic bottle.

Homemade carbon filter

Plastic Bottle Filter

Instructions for the manufacture of the filter, based on charcoal, is as follows:

  • The first step is to cut the bottom in a plastic bottle.
  • Then a round hole of a suitable diameter is cut in the plastic lid of the bucket.
  • Next, the bottle is inserted into the hole in the cap.
  • After that, the filter is filled with filler.

Note! It is very important to ensure that the bottle fits snugly against the edges of the hole. To do this, they should be treated with sandpaper and use a rubber gasket.

Canister filter

Therefore, the principle can be made more convenient filter installation. For example, a plastic tank or canister can be used as a receiving container. Its optimum volume is about 20 liters.

Work is performed in the following order:

  • At the bottom of the canister you need to make a hole and insert a faucet into it for the receipt of purified water.
  • Then, on the receiving container you need to install a plastic ten-liter bottle with the filling opening done.
  • Next you need to make a filter. For its manufacture, you can use a piece of plastic pipe with a diameter of 40 mm. The top and bottom of it should be closed with pieces of perforated plastic, which can be fixed with hot melt glue. The pipe itself must be filled with charcoal.
  • The filter should fit tightly into the neck of a ten-liter bottle. After that, you need to connect the receiving tank with a bottle and filter.

In such a filter installation, you can pour a bucket of well water, which will be filtered in a few hours. Thus, in your home there will always be a certain supply of clean drinking water.

Note! The above installation is a fine water purification, but in addition, there should be a coarse filtration of water in the well using a fine mesh installed in the intake manifold. It is designed to clean water from impurities that can damage the equipment.

Coarse Well Filter

Three-column design

If a full-fledged water supply system is connected to the house, then a self-made three-column filter can be used to clean the well water.

It is executed as follows:

  • First you need to prepare three flasks.
  • Then the flasks are connected in series with each other with two nipple adapters. In this case, you must strictly adhere to the symbols in / out (in / out). Nipple threads must be sealed with a FUM tape.
  • Next, the extreme openings of the flasks should be connected to the tube using straight adapters.
  • After that, you can connect this filtration system to the water supply system with the help of a tee, which cuts into the water supply system.
  • Then, at the outlet, a standard drinking water tap should be connected to the cleaning system.
  • After completing the system, the flasks should be filled with filter material. For these purposes, you can use a polypropylene cartridge or a carbon filter.

The cost of manufacturing such a filter will be significantly lower than the cost of the filter unit from the manufacturer. Therefore, such a waste of time and effort is fully justified.

Corporate three-filter

I must say that there are various cartridges on sale that are designed to eliminate a wide variety of pollutants from the water. To find out more precisely what kind of cleaning water needs from your well, it is necessary to make its chemical and bacteriological analysis in a special laboratory.

Note! Before using the charcoal filter, it must be flushed. To do this, pass through it a liter or two of water, which you just need to pour out. This will remove small particles of coal from the filter that may contaminate water.

Conclusion

Despite the prevailing opinion about the purity of water from a well, as a rule, it needs to filter no less than water from a centralized water supply system. In most cases, the best option are homemade water filters from the well, made according to one of the schemes presented above. However, before proceeding with the manufacture of the device, it is desirable to perform a water analysis (find out here how to deepen the well yourself).
