Repair of wells on their own
Own well gives you the opportunity to be independent of city services and to receive water around the clock in the right quantity and of good quality. Cleaning and repair of wells are mandatory measures that should be carried out regularly to maintain the source in working condition and preserve the quality of drinking water.
Mandatory maintenance requires not only mines to get water, but also sewer systems that are responsible for sewage disposal, accumulation and recycling.

Each house, to ensure normal living conditions and comfort has a water supply and sewage system, each of these systems has its own wells and periodically needs maintenance and cleaning. Repair and cleaning of the well are carried out with certain periods of time, which are set depending on the type of soil, the intensity of use of the structure.
Very much depends on the material used in construction, as well as on compliance with the rules of construction and the quality of work performed. If poor quality materials were used in construction, the type of soil was not taken into account and the technology was not observed, then the source shaft will constantly fail and require repairs.
Types of repair work
All repairs can be divided into two types:
- scheduled maintenance;
- unscheduled work.
So now in more detail:
- Scheduled repairs are carried out after a certain period of time to maintain proper water quality, timely detection and elimination of minor faults or damage. It is worth noting that any major accident does not happen by chance, it is always preceded by a number of minor faults and if left unchecked and not eliminated in time, their combination leads to major breakdowns.
To the planned repair work include:
- cleaning the mine from growths and deposits;

- cleaning or replacing the bottom filter;
- disinfection with special solutions;
- pumping water after repair and prolonged downtime;
- sealing of small cracks in the walls of the mine.
- major malfunctions resulting from improper use of the source, extraneous mechanical effects or violation of construction technology.
For unscheduled work include:
- elimination of the displacement of concrete rings;

- fastening of rings to each other (if they did not do it during construction);

- replacement of damaged rings in the well top;
- deepening of the well with a sharp reduction in the water level or clogged filter.
At arrangement of systems of the sewerage and water supply, wells from reinforced concrete rings or plastic are most often used. Plastic wells practically do not need to be repaired, since they are a monolithic shaft of material that is strong and resistant to mechanical stress.
Mines of concrete rings are also used in both systems, therefore, the repair of sewer manholes is practically no different from repairing plumbing, because they have the same faults.
Conducting repairs in concrete wells
Sealing joints

Works on sealing joints between reinforced concrete rings are the most common type of minor breakdowns and easily removable, so anyone can carry out such a well repair with their own hands, not having special skills, but observing elementary safety rules.
The cracks in the rings appear as a result of the shrinkage of the soil and its displacement. This is the normal behavior of the soil in different seasons. To eliminate cracks, you can use ordinary cement mortar, mixed with ordinary PVC glue.
You can use ready-made mixtures for sealing, but their price will be significantly higher than the components for the cement slurry.
To seal the cracks at the joints of the plates, you will need:
- putty knife;
- cement mortar;
- brush on metal;
- hammer.

Tip: Before you putty cracks, you must first knock it with a hammer to remove the old putty and remove loose elements. After that, clean the place with a brush on the metal, remove the dust as much as possible and cover with a solution using a spatula. Try to push the mortar deep into the cracks.
If large cracks are found through which the ground and upper water penetrates, then repair of the well from concrete rings in such cases is carried out from the outer part of the mine. To do this, a pit is dug to the desired depth from the side of the crack, the seam is machined from the outside and the pit is buried back.
It is important to remember that after the joint is coated with cement mortar from the outside, it is possible to additionally lubricate the joint with bitumen mastic for better waterproofing. If time does not eliminate large cracks between concrete rings, then this will lead not only to water pollution, but also to the displacement of the rings.
Offset concrete rings
Repair: displacement of the rings in the well is a rather complicated operation that requires partial disassembly of the entire well shaft. The displacement usually occurs as a result of the ground movement, if during the construction of the mine the rings were not fixed together or a pad of sand and rubble was installed around the walls of the mine.

The technology of repair of wells in such cases involves the dismantling of all the concrete rings above the point of displacement, re-installing them at the right place and securing each other with special metal brackets. On the outer part of the mine, an additional layer of large crushed stone is additionally laid, which softens the pressure of the soil on the mine as it moves.
Well deepening
Deepening also apply to repair work. With incorrect initial calculations of the depth of the well or as a result of a number of other reasons, the water level at the source may drop significantly or disappear altogether. In such cases, measures will be needed to deepen the mine, which uses repair rings for the well.
Note! Repair rings are called, the outer diameter of which is slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the rings already installed. Repair rings for wells are lowered to the bottom of the mine, set on each other and carry out the deepening work on the same principle as the well itself was built, where all the concrete rings descend under their own weight as they deepen (see photo).

Conducting work on the deepening, to use already installed rings will not work, because after the time, they are tightly clamped by the soil as a result of small seasonal movements. You should not try to lower the installed concrete products with force, this can lead to significant damage and eventually require more complex repairs with partial disassembly of the well, which will inevitably entail additional financial costs.
Before repairing a well with your own hands, you need to clearly assess your capabilities, the availability of special knowledge and the necessary tools. In many cases, carrying out any work yourself can not only harm the source itself, but also harm your health. Therefore, if you doubt your own abilities, it is better to seek help from a specialized company and hire a brigade of skilled workers.
Sewer Well Cleaning

Repair of the sewer well is not much different from similar work on troubleshooting in the sources of fresh water, where the same concrete rings are used for the construction of the shaft and the tip.
The difference is that these wells perform different functions, but the technical device is practically the same for all and the types of faults too.
Conclusion
For any work in deep mines, there is a special safety instruction, which provides for the availability of personal protective equipment and safety elements, as well as certain rules on the use and composition of construction material used in the implementation of repair work.
