Replacing the hot water meter yourself

Installing a meter for hot or cold water saves your budget considerably, because you pay for the actual water consumed, you can control your expenses. And if you take into account the cost of one cube, for example, hot water, then the savings are substantial, especially since metering devices serve more than one year. But still for various reasons (the end of the intertesting interval or breakdown) they have to be removed. In this case, replacing a hot water meter with your own hands is another way to save money.

Coordination

When it comes time to replace the hot water meter, you will have to decide who will do the job. Technically, this operation is simple and almost every man will be able to perform it independently. But first you need to coordinate this issue with the organization that is responsible for the metering device. This may be a management company (housing office or housing department) or a heat supply organization supplying hot water. Since these devices are sealed by her, then, at a minimum, she will have to ask her for permission to remove the seals. And at the same time to find out - whether it is possible to make a replacement counter. Some organizations categorically prohibit their consumers from doing such work without their participation. It is dictated by the filling of the budget of the organization (the service is paid).

Preparing for replacement

It goes without saying that you need to purchase a metering device, so you need to take a responsible approach to choosing a new meter. When buying, make sure that you correctly fill out the passport on the counter, put down the date of sale and stamp the store. Board on the date of factory state calibration. From the date that it is affixed to the time of purchase should take no more than a year. Also check the equipment: usually a set of nuts and gaskets are sold with the meter. What quality and cost of the device to buy - you decide. It is better to get a better water meter, because it will last longer. But if the quality of water in your area is not very good, then a device of average quality will do.

The check valve and the coarse filter will also need to be replaced, so buy them at the same time (do not forget that the diameter of the outlets of the water meter, check valve and filter must match).

Next, prepare the necessary tools: pipe wrench and gas wrench. It is better to additionally buy silicone pads of the desired diameter (half an inch for a water meter, and three-quarters of an inch for a private house). This is done because the gaskets that are sold together with the meter are usually paronitic. They quickly wear out and stick to the fitting, and this makes it difficult to unscrew the nuts. Silicone pads last longer.

Before removing the metering device, it is necessary to block the hot water, and cold water at the same time. The fact is that there is a high probability that the pressure in the cold water supply system is high enough, and it will squeeze water into the hot water supply system. For this reason, water may leak from the hot pipe. So, the water is blocked at the entrance to the apartment or house with special valves. If there are none, then it is necessary to negotiate with the Housing Office (Housing Department) for the provision of such a service. Most likely, this service is paid. Time and day will have to be coordinated.

Sequencing

When everything is ready, you can proceed to the immediate replacement of the device. To reset the remaining water from the house water system, open any mixer, and wait until water stops flowing from it. Then unscrew the union nuts with an adjustable wrench. If the nut is unscrewed badly, then you can hold the water meter with a gas key for the metal part of the body in the exit area. In this case, the wrench moves counterclockwise, and the gas - clockwise. By applying the force in this way, you will loosen the loose nut. In case of failure will have to heat the nut with open fire, and only then unscrew.

If the filter and valve require replacement, they are also removed. When these components do not change, they will most likely have to be unscrewed after annealing in order to replace the winding with thread.

After dismantling, proceed to the installation of a new water meter. After the valve we screw in the coarse filter, and on the pipe (after the water meter) we wind the check valve. Pre-thread wrapped FUM-tape or flax. Then fasten the union with the cap nuts to the valve and filter. After that, we add a water meter: we tighten the captive nuts by hand and press for one turn with an adjustable wrench, while holding the device by the body. And the last action - turn on the water. If there are drops of water in the joints, the nuts just have to be pressed a little with the key. When leaks at other joints have all unscrew and rewind.

Commissioning

After replacement, the meter must be sealed. To do this, call the representative of the organization. He hangs a seal and makes the act of acceptance into operation.
